I Have A Dream Upper Hutt
I Have a Dream is designed to produce positive outcomes for the children involved, their whānau and the communities they live in. By offering the services of a consistent caring adult (a Navigator) for up to 15 years of their schooling life (within our Dream Partner Schools).
Our Navigators provide mentoring, tutoring, life coaching and support for our Dreamers. We instill values of higher education, career aspirations and life success, and we ensure every child has the resources, opportunities and networks they need to succeed.
Helping Kiwi kids transform their lives, futures and communities
Since 2003, I Have a Dream has focused on helping Kiwi kids to transform their lives, futures and communities. The programme currently works in the Tikipunga and Otangarei communities of Whangārei and the intention is to be present for at least another 10 years, working holistically and in partnership with whānau, schools and the community, and is now also in Upper Hutt, Wellington. Our core long-term goal is to affect positive generational change and outcomes for any community we are involved in.
We help to ensure that each child (a Dreamer) graduates with the academic and life skills to successfully transition to a career or further study. This will ensure that they become positive role-models who add value to their communities, increasing economic and social outcomes for our country.
We empower each dreamer with
A navigator
I Have A Dream Navigators encourage and support their individual group of kids, teaching them the life skills and academic assistance they need to succeed.
A 15 year journey
Generational change takes time. I Have a Dream is focused on long-term solutions, using an evidence-based, whole-child approach to work with Kiwi kids from their first years at school to the age of 20.
An equitable opportunity
I Have a Dream doesn’t work only with the most talented or at-risk children. Our program is available to every child in the low-decile schools in which we work.
I have a dream is focused on long-term solutions to create generational change
Using an evidence-based, whole-child approach, we work with Kiwi kids for up to 15 years, from their first years at school until they move on to tertiary study or employment. We provide wraparound services and do whatever it takes to keep each of our Dreamers on track – because we know that giving kids access to the support and resources they need will lead to improved academic and life success.
The heart of the I Have a Dream programme are our Navigators. These full-time adult advocates work one-to-one with the children in each year level, providing consistent, caring adults whom Dreamers can rely on for their entire journey with us. Navigators have a formal relationship with the school they work in and follow their assigned group of Dreamers through primary, secondary, and tertiary education to provide consistent academic oversight, advocacy, and support. They also engage with the children’s whānau and the wider community.
